UNIVERSITY CLINIC OF OTOLARYNGOLOGY, HEAD AND NECK SURGERY

Problem-Based Learning (PBL)

The University Department of Otolaryngology directs and organizes the Problem- and Patient-Oriented Learning (POL) course. POL focuses on students analyzing and resolving a real-world clinical case.

The written patient case is at the heart of POL. The patient case unfolds over several pages, leading up to the final diagnosis, and contains a wealth of clinical and diagnostic information. Students work through these cases in small groups, using resources such as textbooks. The faculty members serve as tutors and guide the students’ learning process. In a non-exam environment, POL courses give students the opportunity to understand disease pathogenesis and relate it to the patient’s clinical presentation.

POL is thus an interdisciplinary course that integrates theoretical foundations with the clinical picture for each patient case. The course encourages students to take the initiative in analyzing the patient cases.
