Interdisciplinary and international: MAPBio symposium in Magdeburg
The international MAPBio Symposium took place in Magdeburg from 5 to 7 May 2025. On this occasion, researchers from all over the world came together to discuss pathophysiological processes at physiological barriers. The event, organised by the Research Training Group GRK 2408, was hosted by the Faculty of Medicine at Otto von Guericke University. It provided a stimulating platform for cross-border and interdisciplinary scientific exchange.
In six rounds of lectures, 13 internationally renowned guest speakers presented their latest research findings. The topics ranged from host-pathogen interactions and immunotherapeutic research to epithelial metabolism and chronic inflammation. The presentations not only presented innovative results, but also stimulated lively discussions. The interdisciplinary dialogue between the participants was also promoted by a poster presentation and panel discussion.
This intensive academic exchange with established researchers was rated as particularly beneficial by the junior researchers of RTG 2408. Social events, such as the joint city tour and dinner in the historic Mark Fortress, also contributed to the special atmosphere. The symposium therefore proved to be an excellent opportunity to build up contacts. It not only provided well-founded scientific contributions, but was also characterised by cooperation, curiosity and academic commitment.
The MAPBio Symposium was organised by the doctoral students of RTG 2408 as part of their qualification programme and funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG).

Background
The Research Training Group 2408 ‘Maladaptive processes at physiological interfaces in chronic diseases’ has been funded by the German Research Foundation for a total of nine years since 1 October 2018, now in its second funding period. In addition to thematically focussed research, the focus is on the qualification of young scientists. A structured training programme prepares doctoral students specifically for the academic job market.
