Department of Phoniatrics and Pediatric Audiology
Dear patients, young and old, dear parents, and dear family members!
A warm welcome to our department. We’re delighted that you’ve found your way to our website, and we hope to meet you in person soon.
What exactly do specialists in phoniatrics and pediatric audiology do? And what do these complicated terms actually mean?
Phoniatrics can be translated from Greek as the study of the voice and is a medical specialty that deals with the diagnosis, treatment, and scientific foundations of disorders of the voice, speech, and swallowing.
Pediatric audiology refers to the specialized diagnosis and treatment of hearing disorders in children.
Together, these two disciplines form our specialty of phoniatrics and pediatric audiology.
To do justice to the holistic approach of our field and to get to the root causes of communication disorders, the discipline of phoniatrics and pediatric audiology maintains close ties with other medical specialties, such as neurology and psychiatry, rehabilitation medicine, pediatrics, and social pediatrics. The closest collaboration takes place with otolaryngology and oral and maxillofacial surgery.
To ensure the healthy development of our youngest patients with hearing and speech disorders, close communication with non-medical disciplines—such as (special) education, psychology, audiology, and hearing aid acoustics—is essential.
Of course, collaboration with speech-language pathology, (academic) speech therapy, speech-language education, and all related fields, as well as physical therapy and occupational therapy, is indispensable. Interdisciplinary exchange and the ability to think “outside the box” are not only professionally beneficial but also a personal priority for us.
The Department of Phoniatrics/Pediatric Audiology is organized under the German Society for Phoniatrics and Pediatric Audiology (DGPP).
