Cochlear implant (CI)

There are hearing disorders where, despite the latest hearing aids, speech understanding is not sufficient. Those affected become increasingly withdrawn, and interpersonal interaction is significantly impaired. With these hearing disorders, the auditory sensory cells in the cochlea are usually largely or even completely lost. A cochlear implant (CI) can replace the lost function of the auditory sensory cells and stimulate the auditory nerve directly. To do this, a small electrode array is inserted directly into the cochlea of the inner ear during an operation. In this way, the CI enables patients with severe hearing loss and deafness to hear again. Patients who are deaf on one side after a sudden hearing loss also benefits from a CI. By regaining their hearing, patients should be able to communicate almost normally in everyday life and thus achieve a significantly improved quality of life.
